Kathmandu, Aug 29: As of Saturday afternoon, 669 dead bodies were retrieved from various parts of the country following the devastating floods that ravaged Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river corridors on August 26.  Of them, 148 are women, 268 are men, 22 girls and 20 boys. Total 211 bodies are found maimed.  

The corpses were recovered from Rasuwa (13), Nuwakot (41), Dhading (49), Chitwan (248), Gorakha (54), Tanahu (31), Nawal Parasi East (158), and Nawalparasi West (75). 
Among these, 20 bodies have been handed over to their families. However, lack of forensic doctors in the affected districts has posed severe challenges to the identification and management of dead bodies. 

Similarly, the limited availability of refrigerated enclosures for storing the bodies has made it further challenging in preventing the bodies from decaying. Hospital's mortuaries are already full.
In view of such difficulties, the District Administration Office, Chitwan on Saturday, inhumed some of the bodies.   

According to the Central Police spokesperson Deputy Inspector General of Police, Abhi Narayan Kafle, the shortage of required number of mortuary refrigerators has been greatly realised and it has emerged as a major concern. "We are in touch with the National Disaster Risk Reduction Authority (NDRRMA) to arrange such equipment vital for the safe storage of the dead bodies." 
Doctors have warned of the possibility of an epidemic outbreak in the absence of safe management of corpses. 

A special team has been mobilised for the retrieval, identification and management of the bodies, the Nepal Police said. The details of the retrieved bodies are available on the official website of Nepal Police. 
According to the official data, a total of 2,362 people including 523 foreign national have remained unaccounted since the catastrophic floods. Security personnel have been massively mobilised along Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Trishuli riverbanks to search for the missing ones. 

The Nepal Police has also launched an online portal to register the report about the missing people. The details of those injured receiving treatment in various hospitals can be accessed through the Nepal Police official facebook page. 

Likewise, tourist police has been mobilised to deal with incidences concerning the out-of-contact foreign tourists. 

A total of 2,301: 1,506 males and 795 females have so far been rescued in the aftermath of the flood and they have been accommodated at the Nuwakot-based nine holding centres. However, such holding centres are available in Dhadhing, but no rescued is presently staying in such facilities. 

A total of 22 medical teams of the Nepal Police are presently in the field for the rescue and treatment of the injured. Sniffer dogs and even drones have been used for the search operation for those who remain unaccounted for. 

According to the police, the lack of necessary items and equipment, including muck boots, high-weight resistance drones and wireless tracking devices has been highly realised during  search and rescue operations. 

Meantime, the Prithvi Highway, which was disrupted by the floods, has resumed operation from Saturday. The Naubise-Muglin Section was reopened on Saturday.  
People involved in theft, looting and other offenses, taking the advantage of the situation, have been arrested and punished according to the law, it is said.  
The people responsible for spreading misinformation, disinformation and propaganda are being identified and brought to the book.
